German course

If you do not have any proof of a required language examination yet, you can apply online for the German courses in the German as a Foreign Language department.

The courses last three months and several course periods are offered per year. The language courses are subject to a fee and you can enrol as a student at Ruhr-Universität Bochum for the duration of your participation (additional approx. €330 social contribution per semester).

Admission and visa

You can apply for a visa at the German Embassy with the admission that you receive from the German as a Foreign Language department. It is not, however, an admission to studies, but initially only for the language course. Once you have successfully completed the language courses, you can apply for the studies.

If you need to apply for a visa, please note that at least three months should elapse between the application and submission of the application documents and the start of the course.

The application deadlines for the next German courses have not yet been fixed. We will keep you up to date on these pages.

If you would like to apply directly for several course levels (A1, A2, B1, B2), please do so in one application.
Only the most recently received application is valid.

Please answer all of the questions carefully and truthfully. If you have any questions or problems, please contact our application hotline as soon as possible.

After completing the online application, you will receive a confirmation of receipt and the check sheet by e-mail.

On the check sheet, you will find the applicant number and all the information you need to send the documents to the Admission Office.

With the applicant number and your date of birth, you can view the status of your application at any time in the admissions information portal (Infoportal).

Submission of the documents

After the online application, you must send your complete application documents together with the check sheet to the address given there. Please note the stated date of confirmation.

Please only send complete application documents. It is not possible to send individual documents.

The following documents must be sent as certified copies:

  • University certificates with lists of individual grades and possibly a final degree certificate
  • Proof of completed university entrance examination (if available)
  • School leaving certificate (not required for completed studies)
  • Copy of passport (single copy)
  • Check sheet (single copy)

Only French or English certificates do not require a German translation.

We generally do not require CVs, letters of motivation, photos, internship and work references or letters of recommendation.

Further proceedings

Upon receipt of your application documents, we will check the formal requirements as soon as possible and whether you are eligible to study at our university (university entrance qualification, Hochschulzugangsberechtigung - HZB).

As soon as this examination has been completed positively, we will provide you with a registration form on the admissions information portal (Infoportal) and send your application documents back to you by post.

Please complete the registration form and send it, together with a copy of your passport, to the Department German as a Foreign Language. You will find the address and registration deadline on the registration form.

Continue to the Department German as a Foreign Language

Upon receipt of the registration form, you will receive an invoice from the Department German as a Foreign Language.

As soon as payment has been received, you will receive notification of admission from the Department German as a Foreign Language.

Please note: Once we have provided you with the registration form, the Admission Office will no longer be responsible for further processing, but rather the Department German as a Foreign Language. If you have any questions, please contact our colleagues there directly.

If you would like to enrol as a student at Ruhr-Universität Bochum during your German course, the Department German as a Foreign Language will organise your enrolment.
