Second Degree Applicants

If you have already successfully completed a degree course and would now like to study a restricted subject, you will have to apply for a second degree program.

If the subject you would like to study is a non-restricted program, you can enrol with the required documents within the enrolment deadlines. To do this, please register in the RUB portal and submit the relevant request for enrolment or transfer.

For subjects with restricted admission, first find out whether you fall into the group of second degree applicants:

Am I applying for a second degree program?

When applying for an restricted Bachelor's/state examination degree program ...

  • you are a second degree applicant if you have completed an accredited/recognized degree program (at least three years) at a German university at the time of application..
  • you are not a second degree applicant if you have not yet completed a degree (Bachelor's, state examination...), but just want to change a subject, study an additional subject or change the subject or degree.

When applying for an admission-restricted Master's degree program ...

  • you are a second degree applicant if you have already successfully completed a Master's, Magister, Staatsexamen or Diplom degree (except Diplom from a university of applied sciences).
  • you are not a second degree applicant if you have already have completed several Bachelor's degrees.

The regulations on second degree programs also do not apply to the Master's degree programs offered by the RUB Academy.

As a second degree applicant, you use the online application like all applicants.

Application for the second degree program

Depending on your subject, please apply via the RUB application portal or, for subjects that are allocated via the dialog-oriented service procedure, please register via hochschulstart.de first.

The online application asks for the university history of all applicants, so that you can also submit the required application for a second degree in this context.

To apply for a second degree at RUB, you will need at least your first degree certificate. Please upload this in the RUB application portal. You can also upload a written justification for your second degree in the new RUB application portal.

Please note the information on admission regulations below. For further details, especially regarding the form and deadline of the required documents, will be provided during the application process.

Admission regulations for second degree courses (Bachelor/State examination/Master of Education)

Second degree applicants have their own quota, which is up to three percent of the available study places.

RUB awards study places for second degree applicants in locally admission-restricted degree programs according to the same legal regulations that the Foundation for University Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung applies to medical degree programs.

Allocation according to measured number: examination result + justification

A ranking is created for the allocation of study places: The important factor here is a point score that is formed from the examination result of the first degree (the degree that qualifies for the desired degree is used) and the degree justification for the second degree.

Additional information on second degree programs can be found directly in the North Rhine-Westphalia Award Regulation (Annex 1) and on our information sheet for second degree applicants.
