Student halls

Student halls are a handy all-inclusive solution for students: fully furnished, partially furnished, or unfurnished – there is something to suit every taste and every budget.

The facilities and furniture in student halls vary greatly. Internet and cable TV are usually included in the rent; most student halls have communal laundry facilities with washing machine and dryers. There are also halls with in-house gyms, billiard and table tennis equipment, club rooms, a bar or barbecue areas.

The academic services office Akademisches Förderungswerk (AKAFÖ) is in charge of most student halls in Bochum.

AKAFÖ student halls

All student halls are located in the vicinity of the campus of Ruhr University Bochum (RUB). This is one of the reasons why they are greatly sought-after; you might have to wait up to six months to be allocated a room. AKAFÖ also provides rooms in student halls that are fully accessible for students with disabilities.

A central office is in charge of all managerial and administrative services of AKAFÖ student halls; it is located in the SH building (Studierendenhaus) on the campus of Ruhr University Bochum. Students can also apply for AKAFÖ accommodations online. Additional information about individual student halls and the online application process is available at

For exchange students

A number of rooms in AKAFÖ student halls are reserved by the International Office for international exchange students. This, too, is a very popular option and it is recommended to apply for one of these rooms in good time. Detailed information is available on the

International Office website.

Third-party student halls

Various initiatives (such as clubs, housing associations, and churches) also provide student halls. Applications are to be submitted directly to the respective initiative.
