How can I manage my studies? Did I choose the wrong field of study? What are my career prospects? What alternatives do I have? How can I figure out whether continuing my current studies is still the right path for me?
Ruhr University Bochum offers a range of advising and support services for students who are having doubts about their studies or considering a change in direction.
Studying in another country can come with additional challenges. Maybe you're struggling with academic expectations, feeling uncertain about your degree program, or wondering whether studying in Germany is still the right choice for you.
International students may experience doubts for many different reasons:

A one-on-one advising session can help you organize your thoughts, talk through your concerns, and explore possible next steps.
Our advising is confidential, tailored to your individual situation, and open to all possible outcomes. Whether you're considering continuing your current degree program, making changes to your studies, or exploring a completely different path, we're here to help you find the option that works best for you.
Sessions are available in person, by phone, or via Zoom.

Changing your degree program, taking a break from your studies, or leaving university can involve additional considerations for international students.
Depending on your situation, important questions may include:
You don't need to have all the answers before contacting us. We can help you identify important questions, explore your options, and find the right services to support you.
Please note: If you hold a student residence permit, changes to your studies may affect your residence status. We recommend contacting the International Office to clarify any immigration-related questions before making a decision.
Are you having doubts about your studies because you're unsure what career opportunities your degree will offer, what your chances are in the German job market, or which career path is right for you?
Our advising services for students questioning their studies can also help you with these concerns. Together, we can explore what's behind your doubts and identify possible next steps that make sense for your individual situation.
If your main concerns are career planning and transitioning into the job market, mycareer@RUB offers specialized services for international students. These include support with career planning, internships and student jobs, job applications, connecting with employers, and starting your professional career.
We also work closely with other advising and support services at RUB to assist international students. Depending on your concerns, the International Office or the Student Financial Advisory Service may be the right place to turn to. If needed, we can help you find the most suitable service and connect you with the right people.
